Debt & Welfare Benefits Adviser

Responsible to: Through Senior Solicitor to the Management Committee

Salary: £24,472 per annum

Hours: Full-time (37 hours per week)

Contract: Fixed term contract for 9-months

Job Description

In accordance with Law Centre policies:

  1. To provide debt and welfare benefits advice and assistance, in conjunction with other staff, through telephone and email (plus some face-to-face) advice and ongoing casework;
  2. To advise and assist clients with regard to their rights and responsibilities regarding their welfare benefits;
  3. To provide debt advice and support including preparing financial statements and negotiating with creditors;
  4. To maintain an awareness of the existing and emerging specific needs of the community where services are being delivered;
  5. To maintain clear, accurate and accessible records of all casework undertaken in line with Nottingham Law Centre’s policies and procedures;
  6. To work closely with specialist advisers and refer cases on to them as appropriate;
  7. To maintain up-to-date knowledge of relevant welfare benefit and debt updates and attend relevant training courses and meetings;
  8. To record statistical and administrative information relating to casework and enquiries;
  9. To attend and report to the management committee when required;
  10. To contribute to the Law Centre’s social policy work, policy formulation and planning;
  11. To carry out the duties of the post with due regard to Nottingham Law Centre’s policies and procedures.

Person Specification

Essential

  1. Experience of advice regarding debt and welfare benefits;
  2. Experience of managing an advice caseload;
  3. The ability to work well within a team;
  4. The ability to work on own initiative and be self-motivating;
  5. The ability to work well within pressurised situations;
  6. Good case management and time management skills;
  7. A willingness to train and keep up to date with developments in legislation;
  8. A commitment to the aims and principles of the Law Centre.

Desirable

  1. An understanding of the voluntary sector;
  2. Experience of working with marginalised individuals and communities;
  3. Experience of using Office 365 and other computer packages.

Job Description

  7. To maintain up-to-date knowledge of relevant welfare benefit and debt updates and attend relevant training courses and meetings;
